Shared note

Marjorie C. Davidson provided me with the following information. It was told by Mildred Nestor. Marjorie could not remember whether it was about Susan or her daughter Martha. Since Martha was not married and had no children at the time, it could not have been her. During the Civil War Susan transported cotton to Memphis, Tennessee from their home in Mississippi for the Confederate cause. She concealed the cotton from the Yankees by covering it and piling her children on top, saying to the Yankee patrol that she was trying to get her children to a safe place as the war was too close.

The following is her obituary:
Tate County Record:
November 3, 1882
Died:
On Monday at her home in the County, Susan T., wife of Allen A Massey age 63 years.
Deceased was among the Pioneer settlers of the Chickasaw Cession and was intimately acquainted with all the trials that beset a pioneer life. Early in life she linked her fate with the man of her choice and continued to soothe his sorrow and ease his labors until the archer had drawn his bow with unerring aim. A husband and large family are left to mourn their loss. But may what appears to be their loss here be her eternal gain, and we are the more hopeful of this because the deceased led a life consistent in its kindness to others and appersiation of the benefits that flow from and accountability to the Supreme Being. The war of life is over for her. She has crossed over the river, and can now rest under the shade of the trees. (provided by Syble Embrey via Kay Nance Lynn)
The family Bible shows her name as Susan Tillery Greer, but her mother's will lists her as Susannah. (Will provided by Bob Davis-he obtained it from Sybil Embrey).
