RUSH HICKMAN IS MOURNED BY MEXIA CITIZENS
---------
Mexia Wednesday mourned the passing of the oldest merchant in point of active business, Rush Eugene Hickman, 60 years old, who died at 9:20 a. m. at his home at 504 East Carthage street. In bad health for several years, Mr. Hickman had been critically ill for several weeks and at the point of death for a number of days.
The first born of Mexia, Mr. Hickman was a lifelong resident of Mexia. He was born January 22, 1873, the son of J. P. Hickman and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kerley Hickman, in the second story apartment of the frame store which stood where the L. Altman store now stands. His father and grandfather, Mr. Kerley, were in business together, one of the first businesses of Mexia.
A student of old Trinity and a graduate of Mexia high school, Mr. Hickman opened his business in Mexia about 30 years ago, continuing throughout that time. His first store was a racket store, but later it became one of the leading ladies ready to wear and later a dry goods store, occupying the same space on Commerce street for many years.
Like his father before him, who for 18 years did not miss a Sunday school, prayer meeting or other service at his church, Mr. Hickman was a devoted member of the Centrial Presbyterian church, where he was a deacon. He was elevated to eldership, but forced to decline the office because of ill health. In 1905 he married Miss Novyr Clark, who died in 1914. He married Miss Vera Kirkpatrick in 1916 [hard to read.. is this correct?] Mrs. Hickman and one brother, Dr. C. A. Hickman, of Fort Worth, survive him.
