Evangeline `Eva' Bawden

Sept. 14, 1915 -- Aug. 15, 2002

Salvation Army Brigadier Evangeline "Eva" Bawden died of respiratory failure in Crestwood Convalescent Center at Port Angeles. She was 86.

She was the eldest of seven girls born to Salvation Army Majs. Thomas and Grace (Trollson) Mitchell in Grants Pass, Ore. The Army stationed her parents in Port Angeles from 1941 to 1943.

Ordained a Salvation Army minister July 25, 1934, she was stationed in Port Angeles as well as in New Mexico, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon and California during her ministry.

Brigadier Bawden was a member of Soroptomist International, a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow, Community Chest volunteer and member of Pilot.

She married Brigadier Kenneth John Bawden on July 22, 1937, in San Francisco. He died Nov. 25, 1985.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Majs. Ronald and Marilyn Bawden of Glendale, Ariz., and Majs. George and Jeri Bawden of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Majs. Marilyn and Bob Gregory of San Francisco, Lt. Cols. Linda and Terry Griffin of Seattle, Majs. Janice and Doug Williams of San Diego; sister Vermae Laverty of San Lorenzo, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: Two memorials on Sunday, Aug. 25: at 11 a.m. in the Salvation Army Chapel, 206 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles, and at 3 p.m., in Crestwood Convalescent Center, 1116 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. Maj. George Bawden and Lt. Col. Terry Griffin will officiate. A potluck in the church will begin at noon.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Salvation Army in Albuquerque, N.M., with Lt. Col. Don Mowery officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Albuquerque.
