He was born at born 4:50 PM. His military records say he was born 9 December 1895. He was reared by Tiney Sorrells Williams after their mother's death. He was discharged from the USA Army 29 Mar 1919 at Camp Travis, Texas following distinguished service during the war. His service number was 44 356. The records show that he was gassed 18 Jun 1918 and 09 Oct 1918. He was shipped from the U. S. 14 June 1917 and returned to the U. S. 13 Feb 1919. He was awarded the Distinguished-Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action in Europe. It was awarded "For extraordinary heroism in action near Fleville, France, October 2, 1918. His platoon becoming disorganized by enemy artillery fire, Sergt. Jackson halted his men, reorganized them under the heavy fire, and resumed the advance. Later he borrowed an automatic rifle from one of the men in his platoon and firing it from his hip advanced on an enemy machine gun, killing two members of the crew and capturing another." July 9, 1918 he was also cited "for conspicuous gallantry in action" when he "was a member of a carrying party which was misled by a guide to a point 200 yards in advance of our front line where it came in contact with two enemy patrols. Cpl. Jackson, alone, ran forward to meet them and upon finding that they were Germans killed one and caused the others to retire; in the ensuing fight he aided in the withdrawal of his party and when its return drew heavy fire from our front line he ran forward and established its identity." For this he received the silver star medal. On Mar. 30, 1919 he was cited by the Commander in Chief of the French Armies of the East as "an excellent soldier. October 2, 1918, he cooly and courageously fulfilled an important reconnaissance mission inside the enemy lines."
