Beyond our Elusive William Daniel

His obituary said he was 63 years old at the time of death. He had been a pioneer of the Quay community, having moved there 35 years previously at which time he filed on a government claim. The funeral was conducted by a Church of Christ minister named W. B. Andrews. He was survived by his wife Lillian; two daughters, Mrs. T. D. Keith of Quay and Mrs. Luther Owens of Alamogordo; three sons named Dereed, Hugh, and Elvin of Quay; a brother named Ernest Hutchens of Seymore, Texas; three sisters named Mrs. A. D. Davis of Chillicothe, Mrs. Nora Sauceman of Medicine Mound, and Mrs. Ive Charlton of Phoenix, AZ; and thirteen grandchildren.

There is a picture of his tombstone posted on the Massey Family Tree by massey1364 which shows his name as Roy D. Hutchens, May 29, 1878 - Nov. 30, 1941. It is joint withhis wife, Lillian I. Hutchens, Nov. 14, 1876 - Nov. 8, 1981.

He was Roy (could be Ray) Dexter Hutchens, residing in Quay, Quay, NM, aged 41, born 29 May 1877, white, native born, and he was employed in black farming in Quay, Quay, NM. His nearest relative was Lilian Hutchens, Quay, Quay, NM. It was signed by Roy Dexter Hutchens (and the Roy definitely looks like an "o" in his signature!" He was medium height, medium build, gray eyes, and bald with black hair.
